June is National Safety Month — a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of safety in all aspects of our lives, especially at work. Whether you’re on a construction site, in a warehouse, or working outdoors, staying alert and following best practices can prevent injuries and save lives. Here are some key tips to help you and your team stay safe this month — and all year long.

Wear the Right PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

Your first line of defense is the gear you wear. Helmets, safety glasses, gloves, ear protection, and high-visibility clothing are critical depending on the task. Make sure all PPE is in good condition and fits properly.

Stay Aware of Your Surroundings

Always be aware of what’s happening around you. Watch for moving equipment, uneven surfaces, open trenches, and overhead hazards. Don’t assume others can see you — make eye contact with equipment operators before approaching.

Practice Good Housekeeping

A clean jobsite is a safer jobsite. Keep walkways clear, clean up spills promptly, and store tools and materials properly. Clutter can lead to trips, falls, and accidents.

Use Tools and Machinery Safely

Only operate equipment you are trained to use, and follow manufacturer instructions. Inspect tools before use and report any defects or malfunctions immediately.

Follow Lockout/Tagout Procedures

If you’re working with or near electrical or mechanical systems, proper lockout/tagout procedures are essential to prevent accidental energizing. Never bypass safety protocols.

Stay Hydrated and Take Breaks

Especially in the summer heat, it’s easy to underestimate the toll of dehydration and fatigue. Drink plenty of water, take breaks in shaded or cool areas, and watch for signs of heat exhaustion in yourself and coworkers.

Report Hazards Immediately

If you see something unsafe, say something. Whether it’s a damaged ladder, an oil spill, or a missing safety guard, speak up to prevent a potential accident.

Keep Up With Safety Training

Regular safety meetings and ongoing training help reinforce safe practices. Take advantage of toolbox talks, safety workshops, and certifications relevant to your trade.

Safety Is Everyone’s Responsibility

National Safety Month is a great reminder that safety isn’t just a set of rules — it’s a culture. When every team member commits to working safely, we protect ourselves and those around us. Let’s use this month to recommit to creating a safer jobsite every single day.

Stay safe out there — today and every day.
